Bad winter coming?

p1320407

Oh, I hope so! A nice cold one with loads and loads of snow.  Its the last half of September, and its odd, while the Alders, some of which have turned and some are bare, the birches are yellowy, and the willows going, the larches are the most odd. They’re losing their needles and missing the gold bit, they’re and odd brown too, all this before the sycamores have turned. Maybe I’m just reading things in my own little microclimate here!

Snow poor winter?

P1290068

The ski resorts are open, so skiers don’t panic and there is half a meter of snow forecast for the coming half term weeks. But if you look at the piccies of a lot of the resorts, there are green frames to the slopes. Here in the valley, we’ve had one fall of 20cm, most of which has melted leaving a skittery yard of ice, but the hills are brown around us and the further south you drive, all the lower levels are snow free.  As I’ve blogged this year, we’ve had warm temperatures, rain (yes, rain!) and now it feels more like the beginning of March. This weekend, it snowed in all the northerly ranges of Salzburgerland and on Sunday morning I was ready with sharpened shovel – and nothing.  Once again, the Tauern mountains at Obertauern stopped the fall in its tracks.

As my predictions says, the snow was and is late, the resorts are still making loads of snow, and we’ve yet to have an appreciable dump of snow here in Madling. But it’s now a normal winter, if a bit snow poor.

So my new prediction- a couple of heavy falls in February and March, an early thaw and spring YAAAAAAAY! After 8 winters, I really don’t care about the snow any more, I’m no longer excited to see it fall. I see everyday where the grass is showing as a bonus.

Climate change? Could be, really not bothered! Older neighbours says its all happened before, but they all remark that the amount of snow is getting steadily less and less.  Roll on Spring!

‘What I think will happen is snow will be late due to the warm temperatures. The ski resorts will panic like before and create snow. The snow is going to arrive but will be soggy. The temperatures will stay in warm region and we’ll have a late, sluggish spring!’

So where IS the snow????????

P1290024

There is the sound of panic not music in the mountains!  This time last year, the lifts had opened early and the season was underway. This year the opening at Obertauern took place with Andrea Gabalier but without the snow. The weather has been too warm for the snow canons to make snow. There is snow forecast at the weekend but the forecasters keep on putting it back and lighter and lighter. On the more southern areas towards Katschberg there is snow as we’ve got the air from the south. But not enough to ski. The local tv showed the early visitors in Obertauern going WALKING! from the open lifts! NiederÖsterreich has had problems with ice storms bringing down trees and cutting electricity. When we look at the weather cameras on the tv in the morning, the Tirol and Voralberg have even less snow than here!

So my snow prediction is not far off, although I didn’t see the lack of made snow! This time last year we had frosts and cold. I don’t really mind. I’m driving to England for Christmas and I’ll definitely have a GREEN Christmas!!

Snow Prediction!

138

As I write on October 10th, we’re having a real heatwave, and Indian summer, wonderful after it rained here from the middle of August until the end of September. Spring here was mild, after another late snow, which came intensively for about six weeks then went. The whole summer has been cool and damp – my geraniums were so poor. Every time they bloomed it rained and the petals rotted. Now just look at them in the greenhouse, basking in the warmth and flowering like it’s June! The sycamores here are just doing their yellow thing and the larches aren’t far behind.

So my winter prediction?  An early arrival of snow that stays, but leaves early next spring. November will be crisp and bright, not dull and brown.  Lots of snow that equals the precipitation of this summer. And cold, lots of lovely dry deep cold and sunshine. A great skiing season, and for us snowshoeing, as I’ve really given up with the Cross country due to my nerves!

Ok, I lie, that’s what I would like! What I think will happen is snow will be late due to the warm temperatures. The ski resorts will panic like before and create snow. The snow is going to arrive but will be soggy. The temperatures will stay in warm region and we’ll have a late, sluggish spring!
