So where's the snow?

Muddling through in Austria; God, life and a small black dog

Sunlight

The day after the big snow, I had to travel to Salzburg for a library conference. It was the most amazing day and I was glad to escape the snow and the powercuts. Usual Austrian efficiency had the main roads and motorway free of snow.

Once at the centre, we had discussions and seminars. In one room, I was sat near the window. Outside was a mature garden in what must have been the grounds of the house. It just caught the afternoon sun as it began to set, so I took a few photos. The colours were beautiful as they caught the autumn of the trees.

I sat and watched the light change-and enjoying the discussion. Then it was gone. Sadly, I turned back. Then after a while, the sun returned for a brief few minutes, like an extra blessing.

The whole day was like a reprieve from the snow and pressure of the weather at home and I rejoiced in it. Writing this now, I wonder if it was a foreshadowing of what was to come in the next few days; enjoy this and treasure this now.

On the Bus

P1250854

Dave was surprised when I wanted to go alone on the bus to Salzburg and I approached it with a sense of glee. As we left the Lungau, in my high chair, I could see over garden walls, see new things being built, it was the excitement of a holiday trip. It was less interesting once we hit the motorway, but I was just doing my Garfield, pinned to the window. Dave rang me, oh, how I so hate having these conversations in English, but we couldn’t do it in German, its almost embarrassing.

I love travelling, being the observer to things normally missed but soon forgotten. How can you remember all you saw? I like the idea of the headcams on motorbikers helmets, you can do it all again. It was good to arrive, and the journey back was just as interesting, but the thrill had worn off, it was going home to the usual. No exciting escaping the Lungau for the moment.   Never mind, maybe I’ll get another chance soon for another trip!

Christmas egg shop Salzburg -revisit

P1320114

Almost two years since my last visit, I was in Salzburg recently and popped by the shop. Still wonderful and colourful! Sadly my battery was low on the phone, so I couldn’t take any piccies, but they have some new things! Right at the back, I found eggs with pictures of horses, dogs and sheep….and cows!

P1320120

There were also eggs as fruit, e.g strawberries!! Lots of new designs, but the animals were best.  Guess which one I bought for me!!

P1320116

The reverse of the dog one!

From my last visit

P1250806

Sounds odd doesn’t it? I added the egg bit and you can see why!P1250805

We found this shop several years ago, when it was a wet, cold day for tourists in Salzburg and just going into its colourful warmth lifted our spirits.

P1250815

It does have a wonderful selection of eggs for Christmas and some new themes as shown on my pictures.

P1250814

Here I want to feature the Easter Eggs. All ready for the Austrian/Catholic/Pagan tradition of having a tree of willow buds decorated in your house on Easter Sunday.

P1250810

Sound of music ones of course!

I do a tree too as a bit of colour to enjoy, no belief system.

P1250830

Can’t escape Mozart either!

But aren’t they pretty??????

P1250825

Ready to be painted

The shop in in the Judengasse in the old city, so do pop in and enjoy!

Remembering the Holocaust in Salzburg

P1250856

Three members of the Eisenberg family, Lia was only a year old, all taken to a camp in Riga and killed

The holocaust was as much here in Austria as in Germany and the other parts of Europe. In Salzburg, lives are remembered by little brass plaques commemorating lives lost. There’s even been a spat of anti-semitism where someone has been smearing them with stuff top cover them up. Dave and I found some when we were last year. I had though them a way to remember the tragedies that was enduring and special. Dave said, look, they’re being walked over, rubbed and treated with disrespect. I countered they may out live the buildings, but he than said, look at how many streets get torn up when they rebuild. Sad and haunting, but the right commemoration, what do you think?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Threshold

P1250845 On a recent trip to Salzburg, one of my favourite ways of framing a photo, I think she saw me too.  Trouble is we were hot and tired otherwise I might have got the framing a bit better! P1250848     Yes, I even got the Sound of Music, ‘I’ve got confidence in me’  fountain in it!   http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2014/04/04/photo-challenge-threshold/
