Garden time -what the Iceman did

As I write on the 19th, the weather has finally warmed and hopefully we’ve seen the last of the nasty frosts.  We’ve never been so zapped before, it got three of the tomatoes and both the cucumbers and they were fleeced in the greenhouse.  The Beetroot and Sprouts aren’t too chuffed either.  He even got the hedge.

Now we have to decide whether to re-buy of just lop off the damage, there’s such a short growing season here that I feel we’ll never get any crops.  Maybe next week I can plant out the sweet corn.  All the neighbours thinks we’re nuts – I expect so!

Look at my latest acquisition, it was bought in Czechoslovakia for me by a friend’s family after I’d admired theirs.  It was only 35 Euros – £20?.  So much work and it spins.  Maybe it is kitsch but I love it, now I only have the problem of finding it a suitable position!

The Ice man cameth!!!!

Note the frozen phone line in the middle!

As forecast, yesterday the  Iceman or as in Austrian folklore, the Ice Saints  (St. Marmetus, Pancras and Servatius) have been to visit.  This is a Europe wide tradition because these Saints have their feast days during the period when this weather happens, so by default they cause it.  More Catholic mumbo jumbo!!!!!!!!!  Still I’ve got all my tender annuals tucked up under fleece along with the just germinated peas.

We get all this stuff about Global warming and climate change, so I ask this. If it’s all changing so much, why is this phenomenon of a cold spell at the end of May so regular  that its part of folklore and keeps on happening?

Random comment now! One of my jobs today, I found a note asking me to do the windows (which I do every week) and again instructions on what cloths to use, which she’s already told me. I took offence and it took me all morning to get over it. It is difficult to see sometimes when the light is dim in this house if there are smears but I do try to check.  I must realise I’m just the cleaner, not expected to be that bright or do things.  God gave me this job to keep my feet on the ground, and thank you Joyce Meyer for showing me how stupid my reactions are.  This Boss probably has a lot of stress and forgets what she says.

Garden time -the Iceman cometh!

We’ve been enjoying a heat wave here (sorry UK folks) and everything is starting to grow at last.  Its one of the best years ever for dandelions, there’s a field near Neggerndorf which is pure yellow, I must try and photo it!   I mowed our neighbours grass yesterday, loads more mutants and I blatted them all!  The Apple trees are just coming into bloom and they are so heavily laden.  How much of this is a reaction to last autumn or the hard winter?

Most people haven’t put their balcony flowers out yet, they’re waiting for the last visit of the Ice man.  Now this seems to be an Austrian thing as it was on the Salzburgerland weather forecast last night.  We’re due a couple of days of rain and then-1c at night. This happened last year too, we even had snow – trouble is he came again in June with more snow.  It really set back the courgettes, so we’ll fleece them even though they’re not germinated.  I got so twitched after last year that I’ve left everything too late!  I’ve even got emergency seedlings on the window sill.

Once the Iceman has gone,I’ve got the red cabbages, ordinary cabbages, sprouts, leeks and broccoli to plant out.  I bought them from Dave’s garden centre, at 13 cents a go you can’t really lose!  My sweet peas have germinated, I’ve got them in an old barrel with old lilac twigs to grow up.  The idea is to hide the greenhouse from the swingseat!  I’m tying Verbena in the other barrel and Begonias in the old wooden wheelbarrow.  I feel so blessed that this year, thanks Lord!  I have the time and energy to do so much more in the garden.  I should be out weeding now, but I hit my big toe with a door at work yesterday and the nail is only 25% attached, no way am I kneeling down -ouch.  Maybe I will just need to bend from the hips!!!!!!!!!!!
