ZnackAlm in Lungau. After a bit of a climb, you enter a wonderful Alm meadow with waterfalls and lush vegetation. However, there are secret places – ruins of lost lives. This upland valley has a lot of avalanches in the winter. In the past, when farming families would move up there for the summer to make hay and cheese they would find their huts flattened and would have to rebuild. Eventually the tradition turned to more sending dry cows up with calves at foot, or beef cattle and the practise is far less now. What tragedies are hidden in these secret places? These old footings are allover the valley.

I bet there’s a lot of Alpine history hidden in those seasonal mountain pastures, Anna. Very beautiful to look at, but it must have been a rough life, having to rebuild every year. Great post. xxx

Very hard life, they used to bring all the hay they made down in the winters on the back of sledges, looks terrifying!
